i remembered a talk where Shaykh Yahya Rhodus said his wife noticed when in Tarim, the more learned the person, the more the person smiles. an article pasted up my wall, a good brother from UK who wrote of his experiences in Tarim... "your iman increases and you will give off good vibes to be absorbed by those around you.."
i attended a friend's wedding hours earlier. as i came later, i saw i-Phone photos of the couple while waiting for the couple to re-emerge. another friend of mine who was schooled in Egypt and knows a thing or two about the arab culture noted how our friend's newly wedded husband dressed during the nikah.. he was dressed in a simple white jubah, a simple shawl slung on his right shoulder and a white cap (songkok).. like a Yemeni.
i was smiling ear to ear hearing how the nikah took place hours earlier. the bride upon hearing the akad, simply took the marriage gift which was a ring and put it on herself. the groom went ahead to perform sunnah prayers. no show parody of bride kissing groom's hand or groom kissing forehead of the bride amidst aggresive flash of cameras that (Alhamdulillah!) was absent at this majlis. photo taking was at its minimum best.. they were SO shy when walking alongside each other careful not to potray intimacy.. those usual "wedding gestures" our community are familiar with are sunnahs but the adab is it to be done privately between the couple in hopes of incurring Allah's pleasure of performing a sunnah out of love for Rasulullah s.a.w. words can't describe how happy i was that Masni and her husband executed the majlis with much ilm'. may both Masni & her husband Amin, be favoured and pleased by Allah always. that was a good majlis, mashaAllah.
an hour later the couple emerged post solah. almost immediately i recognise the softness in his looks and gestures especially towards a young child he was talking to... befitting of the soothing vibe of a person touched by the miracle pureness of our religion. our religion is a religion of adab with Allah SWT and its creations... strive in that direction and the "giving off of good vibes" i mentioned in the 1st paragraph comes naturally. i have yet to be in Tarim to see it 1st hand but i recognise instantly those traits from religious speakers / teachers and especially visiting Tarim scholars whom i dearly respect. there's something delicate of heart and a soothing softness that these people beam from within. my friend has been blessed mashaAllah.. i know for one, she herself has an innocence and honesty that pairs well with her husband.
will i ever be able to have that hayaa'? hayaa' is loosely termed modesty but the translation doesn't do the arabic word justice. it is religion AND adab towards the religion, understood and practised deep from within the sincerest of hearts that translates into the best of character a muslim can potray.. it gives soothe to anyone fortunate to see it. Allahu Akbar.
